A brave heart has passed away.
Beatrice Lillian O'Hara Delehanty passed away on March 16, 2010 at Etobicoke, Ontario. She was 98 years of age having been born on March 20, 1911 at Canso, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of John Young and Florence (Berrigan) O'Hara. She was predeceased by her parents, all her siblings, her husband Francis Delehanty and her son John Francis Delehanty. She is survived by her children Rosemary Delehanty-Scholl (John) of Mississauga, Ontario, Michael Delehanty (Nancy) of Moncton, Ken Delehanty (Kerri) of Moncton, Ted Delehanty (Joan) of Bedford, Nova Scotia, Memorie Delehanty (Mike) of Etobicoke, Ontario and Shane Delehanty (Cathy) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a graduate of Nova Teachers College at Truro, Nova Scotia and taught school for many years in eastern Nova Scotia. In 1942 she and Francis moved to and resided in Moncton continuously from that time. When all her children were finishing university, she decided to continue her studies at Univeriste de Moncton. In 1971, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Elementary Education degree. In 1972, she received a Bachelor of Education degree. In 1976, she received a Diploma in Higher Education Studies. In 1977, she received a General Teaching Certificate 6 from the Province of New Brunswick. It was at this time that her eyesight started to fail her. She gave up her studies and enthusiastically took up swimming, skating and cross country skiing. It was also at this time that she and Francis started to travel. There were many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, China, Australia and New Zealand. Her final trip overseas was to Ireland in 2003 at the age of 92. In 1989 she finished writing a two volume memoir of her life and experiences. She wrote much poetry and there was nothing more she enjoyed than reading, writing and reciting poetry.To the end she was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife, sister, student, teacher, traveler, storyteller, poet and author. Hold fast your dreams!
Within your heart
Keep one still, secret spot Where dreams may go,
And, sheltered so,

Visitation will be at Tuttle Brothers Funeral Home, 171 Lutz Street, Moncton, NB on Friday, March 26, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 7:00 to 9:00pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church, 43 Botsford Street, Moncton, New Brunswick at 11:00am on Saturday March 27, 2010. A reception will follow in the downstairs hall of St. Bernard's church after the funeral mass. Burial will be in the spring at the Shediac Road Cemetery.
