We, the family and friends, regret to announce the death of a dear aunt and friend, Mary Theresa Elliott. Mary passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at the Harbourview Hospital, Veteran’s Wing in Sydney Mines.
Born in Leitches Creek, Mary was the only daughter of John Robert and Mary Agnes (Nutall) Elliott. Mary had very fond memories of her childhood growing up in the Creek and remembered very vividly when her brothers went to Western Canada on the harvest trains to find work. Mary enlisted in 1942 to the Canadian Women’s Army Corp. active service and obtained the rank of sergeant. She served in the Canadian Dental Corp. and was stationed in Halifax, Toronto and Sydney.
Upon the end of the war in 1945, Mary returned home and went to work for Dr. George MacLeod in New Waterford. She would be seen everyday before 7 a.m. walking the two miles to catch the bus at Dunlop’s Store and at night returning no matter the weather to trek home. When Dr. MacLeod closed his practice, Mary went to work for Dr. Moses Claener and stayed for 25 years until a broken hip forced her retirement at the age of 70 years.
Mary leaves to mourn her nephew, William ‘Bud’ Evans, Mosseyrock, WA., her nieces, Ethel Keen, Ethel, WA., Carol Moore, Mosseyrock, WA., and Sandra and Doug Osborne, Onalaska, WA.; dear friends, Derek and Shirley Bonnell, in whose home she resided for 31 years and their children, Shelley Musgrave (Dave Cogger), Moncton N.B., Angela (Troy) Colburn, Bras d’Or, Marsha (James) O’Rourke, Wooler, Ont., and Scott (Denise) Bonnell, Kentville, N.S. Mary regarded these children as her own and dearly loved Derek and Shirley’s grandchildren.  Mary also leaves to mourn good friends, John and Sheila MacLean and family, Sydney, who have been by her side for the last 15 years and also Valerie Baxendale and the dog, Abby. Mary looked forward to the days Valerie would visit with Abby.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Edward and Albert Elliott; nephew, Leonard and niece, Larraine.
As per Mary’s request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, North Sydney Food Bank or a charity of ones choice.
